***Cornerstone Arts Centre, free documentary screenings and Q&A,
4pm & 6.30pm, Tues 29 November ***
Oxfordshire residents are invited to watch a film and meet the cast of record-breaking fusion energy scientists and engineers aiming to recreate a star here on Earth.
Star Makers – The Energy of Tomorrow, is a behind-the-scenes documentary filmed at UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) that captures the journey of a passionate team working to provide the world with safe, sustainable and low carbon energy in addition to realising a world fusion energy record.
Two FREE exclusive screenings followed by a panel Q&A session will be hosted at Cornerstone Arts Centre in Didcot by UKAEA and Women In Nuclear (WiN) UK as the organisations work together to raise awareness of careers in STEM.
Dr Elina Militello Asp, WiN Regional Lead South, said: “These screenings of Star Makers will provide everyone with a great opportunity to learn about the fascinating research on fusion, an almost limitless energy source, taking place here in Oxfordshire.
“The film also provides an insight into what it can be like working in STEM. We are hosting an after-school screening to encourage secondary school students to attend, but anyone curious about fusion is welcome to either screening.”
Record results announced in February were the clearest demonstration worldwide of the potential for fusion energy. This was achieved by scientists and engineers working with fusion energy machine JET (Joint European Torus).
Dr Joe Milnes, Head of JET Operations, UKAEA, said: “JET is one of the most important machines in the history of fusion energy research. We’re extremely proud to have been operating it here in Oxford on behalf of the EUROfusion consortium over the past four decades. Its longevity and successes have allowed us to break down many barriers on our mission to turn this ultimate science experiment into sustainable commercial power.”
Joe will be on the panel to answer questions following both screenings alongside Fernanda Rimini, EUROfusion Senior Exploitation Manager.
